Discovering America: Writing from the Early Colonial Period

In 1492 Columbus reached the New World and it immediately became the subject of perfuse writing, first by Europeans and then by those who chose to settle the Americas. Starting with Columbus’s reports and moving forward to the early 18^th century, we will read these writings which include sermons, memoirs, and poems. We will give special attention to the New England Puritans and later day representation of their society. Religious experience, the challenges of building a new society, and the encounter with Native Americans will be at the center of our course. We will read works by, among others, Columbus, Shakespeare, John Smith, John Winthrop, Anne Bradstreet, and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
